This year, the Zind-kala-Wasté wishes to give the Freedom Prize to the township of Imizamo Yethu which is located in Hout Bay.

A 250 euros’ check will be sent to this township of this beautiful city, Cape Town.

The Freedom Prize to the towship of Imizamo Yethu. Why does the Zind-Kala-Wasté organizers want to reward especially Imizamo Yethu ?

For two reasons:

The first one is because of the atmosphere, the solidarity and the joy of living of its people despite the misery which is well showed in this documentary film directed by Joël Maître.

You must know that, in South Africa, townships grow like mushrooms. That’s why the Zind-Kala-Wasté Award has to be involved in the field, even if 250 euros is a too small amount of money for a place like Imizamon Yethu. As we always put forward, the Zind-Kala-Wasté award is also a diplomatic tool and if we can help our brothers in Africa, we will take this advantage to do so.

So, this is the first time for the Zind-Kala-Wasté to reward a neighborhood, a town, a school, an atmosphere.

The big question is whether Imizamo Yethu should be part of the architectural heritage. We believe it should be. Imizamo Yethu must be a UNESCO World Heritage site, even if this idea seems a little extreme for some people. Sometimes, you have to be excessive to obtain something. Take the exemple of the Malaysian neighborhood which was the location of the slaves: it became a tourist attraction today. It is a pearl of architecture, a testimony of history for future generations. We think that it shoul be the same way for Imizamo Yethu. It shouldn’t be destroyed but they should enhance, secure and humanize the living conditions of this township.

That’s why the Zind-Kala-Wasté Award wants to help Imizamo Yethu in its 9th year by rewarding this neighborhood with the freedom award.

Meanwhile, people will continue to be poor at Imizamo Yethu waiting to be classified as world heritage by Unesco ?

That’s true that the living conditions are intolerable overthere, the government of Cape Town should invet much more in this neighborhood to make the houses secure.

There is event an international school for wealthy children very close to this township. The government of Cape Town will probably answer us that townships in South Africa grow as mushrooms and that they are overwhelmed.

The second reason is:

After a few weeks after the shooting of this documentary in Imizamo Yethu, a huge fire has destroyed a large part of this township.

Thousands of people were thrown in the street with thieves ready to loot what was left behind, desperate families and children…

Fortunately, Didier, the person we are in touch with overthere, told us a great solidarity has raised very quick to help the people of Imizamo Yethu.

So, as the fate seem to be very hard on Imizamo Yethu, we want to make a small gesture for them.

You want to come back to our first idea: Imizamo Yethu, World Heritage ?

Let’s imagine that the UNESCO organization decides to classify the bay of Hout Bay, which is one of the most beautiful in the world, Imizamo Yethu would surely get economic benefits with the rising of the tourists who will come to see these magnificent landscapes. In fact, today, a lot of tourists want to communicate and visit the people of Imizamo Yethu. One thing for sure: Imizamo Yethu is the heart of Hout Bay. And that is a fact

It is a real pleasure for Zind-Kala-Wasté to help, to show and to talk about Imizamo Yethu. This township will become a reference for our children: for life and freedom.
